Black Horror Renaissance (2017-Now)
In this post I argue the thesis: the audience driven success of Get Out (2017) encouraged more money invested in making black horror. This investment resulted in more black voices successfully telling black stories through the genre which helped push the genre forward while validating unspoken pains experienced by many in the community and generating large return on investments.

Franchise Marathon: Paranormal Activity (2007-2021)
Prior to Paranormal Activity (2007) found footage success was limited to the first Blair Witch Project movie that premiered in 1999 with the caveat that the 2nd movie flopped hard. Like its predecessor in the subgenre the first Paranormal Activity movie relied heavily on guerrilla marketing. That term, guerrilla marketing, refers to marketing that doesn’t feel like marketing or straight up advertising despite being just that.

Scream 5 (2022)
The revival of the Scream franchise 11 years after the last installment feels like a confirmation that a new era of horror has arrived and solidified itself into the horror ecosystem. Modern horror tropes take center stage as a new group of teens in Woodsboro face a new Ghostface copycat killer. The 5th installment simply titled Scream (2022) is the first in the series not directed by Wes Craven who passed away in 2015.

Get Out (2017)
Not too long ago in a place not so far away Black horror meant low budget, badly scripted, comedy-adjacent, straight to TV projects. Rather than a subgenre of horror it was simply a punchline with some notable good additions that tried to break out of that stereotypical box to no longterm avail. From the widespread introduction of the concept the movie stood apart from others immediately in an obvious way: it spoke to Black audiences rather than about Black audiences.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Although many a horror title has tempted the concept of a society unaware of zombies experiencing the zombie apocalypse, like The Walking Dead universe, Night of the Living Dead is the official first. Duane Jones delivers a strong leading portrayal of Ben, a man who is treated like any other man in the film and rather is judged by his actions or ideas rather than the color of his skin.

Halloween Kills (2021)
The Halloween franchise strikes again with the next installment, Halloween Kills (2021) directed by David Gordon Green, featuring the Halloween queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis returning as Laurie Strode. More than one time during this slasher flick I found myself screaming at the screen “WHY?!” when characters made decisions that led to Michael Myers adding another victim to his list of kills.

Saw (2004)
The Saw franchise began as a single movie simply title Saw that hit theaters in 2004 costing less than $1.2 million to make with a concept that came about due to limited resources available to the creators. As James Wan’s directorial debut the success of Saw is apparent in the numbers, generating roughly $108 million at the worldwide box office with 54% of that being domestic.

Candyman (2021)
The movie Candyman 2021 delivers on the promises that the trailer makes, particularly if you're going in not expecting the previous movies to be entirely intertwined in this installment. In the original Candyman that came out in 1992 Tony Todd portrays a fictional but vengeful spirit that kills people who speak his name 5 times into a mirror. Much of the first movie doesn’t pertain to the modern remake & instead takes the legend and develops it into a narrative fit for the ti

My one sided beef with modern media
The beef is more of a general issue with modern media but nonetheless still a problem and that problem, to put it simply is: the endings don’t make sense anymore. We all remember the final season of Game of Thrones. Eight seasons of beautiful character and world building culminated in a final battle viewers couldn't see and bizarre endings for the most beloved characters. The predictions, hopes, and insights went unanswered and a desire to rewrite history.
